I strongly feel that the word of mouth spreads faster than fire. The moment the first show ends, the moviegoers are ready to deliver the verdict. They mince no words, they play no favourites, they come with an open mind [without any biases], they speak nothing but the truth. No wonder, the first show is the deciding factor. It indicates where the film is headed — upwards or downwards.

Last week’s TERE BIN LADEN held very well in its second weekend, despite KHATTA MEETHA making an entry at cineplexes. INCEPTION, also in its second weekend, held strongly [it collected approx. Rs. 2.99 cr. nett], despite Jolie’s SALT invading the cineplexes. SALT too is Jolie’s biggest opener in India, according to a statement issued by Sony.

That brings me to KHATTA MEETHA. The Akshay Kumar-Priyadarshan team is considered one of the hottest combinations in the industry. Naturally then one expected the film to start with a bang. It had a major factor going in its favour: Open week, with no major opposition to counter that Friday. Yet, the opening weekend and weekdays’ numbers are not in sync with the stature of the film.

Internationally, the film has emerged Akshay’s lowest opener  and in India, the film had a drastic fall from Monday onwards. If the weekend is great and the Monday numbers are lower or almost at par with Friday numbers, it doesn’t raise alarm bells. But if the Friday numbers are strictly average [approx. Rs. 7 cr. nett] and the Monday figures are a mere Rs. 3 cr. nett, it clearly indicates that the film hasn’t found appreciation. The junta’s verdict is loud and clear!

It’s high time all actors, whether big or small, realise the fact that star power alone cannot guarantee success. Star power can lure junta to cineplexes on Day 1, but the movie needs to stand on a solid foundation [read script] to stay in the comfort zone, post Saturday. Monday is an acid test for any and every film and if the word of mouth is positive, the film continues to gallop at an even pace for the next four days [Monday to Thursday]. If not, the business sinks faster than Titanic these days!

LOS ANGELES : ‘Inception,’ the sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, topped the North American box office for a second straight weekend, holding off a challenge by Angelina Jolie’s spy action film ‘Salt,’ final receipts showed Monday.

The mind-warp summer blockbuster — one of only a handful of original, non-sequel movies to gain that title this year — hauled in 42.7 million dollars in receipts for the weekend, for a total 142.9 million in its 10 days of release, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

With “The Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan at the helm, the flick about a thief who specializes in infiltrating dreams and stealing thoughts has wowed critics with its complex science fiction concepts.

“Inception” cut down on the ticket intake for the timely “Salt,” which took second spot with 36 million dollars in its debut weekend.

Jolie, Hollywood’s biggest female action flick superstar, plays captivating CIA agent Evelyn Salt, who is accused of being a Russian spy and must prove her innocence while on the run.

3-D animated film “Despicable Me” slipped one spot to third, with 23.7 million dollars in receipts.

The film from Universal Pictures, starring Steve Carell as the voice of Gru, a villain bent on snatching the moon, has earned a surprise total of 161.3 million dollars in its three weeks of release.

“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” took fourth place with 9.7 million dollars, for the Nicholas Cage-starring story of a magician battling evil alongside his hapless pupil.

“Toy Story 3″ held the fifth spot with 8.9 million dollars in receipts and a six-week total of 379.4 million dollars.

Debuting in sixth was Fox’s “Ramona and Beezus,” a dramedy about the lives of two young sisters based on the beloved series of children’s books by author Beverly Cleary. It pulled in 7.8 million dollars.

Seventh place was claimed by “Grownups,” the Adam Sandler and Chris Rock comedy about a reunion of high school friends, which earned 7.4 million dollars in its fifth week.

A previous top earner, vampire romance “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” fell to eighth place with 7.2 million dollars, but still enjoyed its 279.8-million-dollar feeding from its four weeks in theaters.

“The Last Airbender,” director M. Night Shyamalan’s cinematic take on the popular “Avatar” television cartoon series about beings endowed with powers to control air, earth, water and fire, came in ninth with 4.2 million dollars.

“Predators,” updating a 1987 sci-fi classic about CIA-hired commandos hunted by an alien predator in the Central American jungle, rounded out the top 10, earning 3.1 million dollars.

LOS ANGELES : British actor Daniel Craig will star in ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ Hollywood’s first adaptation of one of late Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s record-setting Millennium Trilogy, a Sony Pictures official said.

The newest James Bond impersonator will play journalist-sleuth Mikael Blomkivst in the upcoming production, a version of which has already been filmed in Sweden, a Sony studio spokesman said.

Craig, 42, will start working on the film in a few months, once he and co-star Harrison Ford finish shooting “Cowboys and Aliens,” said the spokesman.

He said David Fincher, who has directed “Seven,” “Zodiac,” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” will be directing “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Entertainment media said Craig could also star in the following two Millennium flicks: “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.”

Sweden’s production company Yellow Bird and director Niels Arden Oplev have already filmed the trilogy, which opened in Europe late last year.

News of Craig’s next project coincided with online retail giant Amazon’s announcement that the Millennium Trilogy had made Larsson the first author to sell more than one million books in Amazon’s Kindle electronic bookstore, since its 2007 launch.

Larsson, the editor-in-chief of the magazine Expo, died suddenly of a heart attack at age 50 in 2004, one year before the first of his trilogy novels hit the stands in Sweden.

MUMBAI : Can two mothers make a home? And can two powerhouse actresses exist peacefully on the same set? Yes, if you have Karan Johar trouble-shooting.

Once again Bollywood’s premiere filmmaker has managed to pull off another first. Dharma Productions’ We Are Family that will hit the screens on September 3, is an intimate, emotional film. “UTV and I decided to release it on September 3 because it’s a film meant for women and family audience, and we wanted an opposition-free clean week,” says Karan. He adds, “It’s the first official adaptation in Bollywood of a Hollywood film — Step-Mom in this case.” He points out that Dharma is fortunate to have a good equation with Hollywood giants such as Fox (My Name is Khan) and now Sony Pictures (We Are Family).

And whether it is getting the lyrics of a song — like he did with Pretty Woman for Kal Ho Na Ho or whether it is adapting the 1998 Susan Sarandon-Julia Roberts film Step-Mom, Karan believes it must be done officially. “There is just no other way to do it than in collaboration with the foreign studio or with getting the official remake rights,’’ says he. He is happy, too, that UTV Motion Pictures is also on board this project that brings together two of his favourite actresses — Kajol and Kareena Kapoor.

“These two return as a pair after they worked with me in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Siddharth Malhotra,

my director, has brought these two women of substance, in substantial roles, for the first time. And, as a viewer and a cinegoer, I was truly excited to see their pairing. I’m also happy that Arjun Rampal has solidly held his own despite being thrown in with these two solid performers in what I describe as an intimate family experience.’’ Karan is particularly proud of the fact that the debutante director has managed to get the desired performances from his actors. “I personally think WAF will provide the audience a happy laugh and a good cry.’’

Angelina Jolie arrived in South Korea with four of her children to promote her new movie ‘Salt’, a thriller about Russian sleeper spies preparing to bring the United States to its knees. At the South Korea premiere of the movie, more than a thousand fans turned up to see the actress. With a relatively modest 100 million US dollar price tag, ‘Salt’ was directed by Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce and co-stars Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Columbia, a unit of Sony Corp, said women accounted for 53 percent of the audience. The movie, which failed to take the North American box office crown from Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Inception’, is expected to make most of its money overseas, with promising openings in India and Taiwan, according to distributor Columbia Pictures.
